Bailey Center for Adolescent Mental Health

The Bailey Center for Adolescents poses the question: how can we design for mental health?
The mental health epidemic affecting America’s teens has been exacerbated in recent years by the COVID-19 pandemic. Treatment systems are overloaded and often ineffective. Utilitarian architecture is typical in these settings, having little regard for the experience of the people who have to exist in these spaces.
We already know of the benefits of natural light, organic materials, and fresh air on the human psyche. How can good design choices improve people’s state of mind?
Community & Independence
Mental health issues can be isolating, but forced socialization can be overstimulating. Gathering spaces of different sizes can accomodate induviduals, small groups, and larger groups. Each dorm room houses one person. This offers residents the choice to engage with others in the way that is best for them.
Nature & Activity
Outdoor walking paths provide residents with fresh air and physical activity. Each dorm has views of the Merrimack River. The indoor/outdoor art studio, gym & yoga space, and private meditation rooms give space to participate in activities that promote mental and physical wellness.
Education & Rehabilitation
24/7 staff to live in the dorms with residents. Offices are where private meetings with social workers and clinicians will occur. The classroom will equip residents with the knowledge they need to forge their own path after they leave, be it seeking out education, employment, or simply living their lives.
